Established in 1993, International Register of Shipping (IS) is an independent classification society working with the objective of 'safeguarding life, property and the environment'. IS is a provider of classification, certification, verification and advisory services.

In order to provide the required services to our clients, the society has established a worldwide network of over 100 surveyors distributed throughout the major ports of the world. The staff consists mainly of highly qualified naval architects, marine engineers, master mariners and other engineers and technical personnel with related qualifications. We believe in the potential of people and in systematic training and education of all our staff members. IS's Head Office is in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA.

As a non-governmental organization, IS acts with impartiality and independence as a self-regulating agency to the international marine industry, with the mission of serving the public interest as well as the needs of our clients by promoting the security of life, property, and the natural environment primarily through the development and verification of standards for the design, construction and operational maintenance of marine-related facilities.

IS establishes and administers Rules and Guidelines for the classification of ships, and other floating marine structures covering their design, construction, and operational maintenance for the purpose of determining the structural and mechanical fitness for their intended purpose.

Through the International Maritime Organization, the governments of the world's maritime nations have established international maritime conventions containing regulations for protecting life, property and the environment. IS has been authorized by over 10 governments, signatory to these conventions, to act on their behalf in conducting surveys and issuing the necessary certificates.

We maintain a management system satisfying applicable international and national standards for the performance f surveys and the issue of Classification and statutory certificates (IS is an ISO 9002 certified company, with certification from SGS.)
